Shi Zhongci (1933-): A mathematician native of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. He studied in the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University in 1951, and graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Fudan University in 1955. He is the researcher of the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific/Engineering Computing (ICMSEC) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, chief scientist of the National Project of Large-scale Scientific and Engineering Computing. He served as the vice chairman of Chinese Mathematical Society, the chairman of Chinese Society of Computational Mathematics, the head of ICMSEC and the director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Science and Engineering Computing. In 1991, he became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

At the end of the 1950s, he built a new algorithm combining the variational principle and perturbation theory and calculated a good approximation of the lowest energy state of the helium atom. He studied the positioning of matrix eigenvalues and obtained a high-precision upper and lower bound estimation formula. Since the mid-1970s, he has been engaged in the theoretical research and application of finite element, and made huge contributions in non-conforming elements. He won the Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of CAS, Natural Science Award, National Natural Science Award, and was rated as a national expert with outstanding contributions.
